Underwhelming

Well, this past weekend I finally made my first trip to Rhode Island’s “Twin River,” the pseudo-casino formerly known as Lincoln Park. Based on my observations, I can tell you without hesitation that Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun have nothing to worry about. One word seems to best describe the Twin River experience: underwhelming.

The actual reason for my trip to Twin River was to attend a concert in the Twin River “Event Center.” If there’s ever an award for “biggest misnomer in Rhode Island,” then Twin River’s use of the phrase “event center” to describe this place would likely win first prize.

This so-called event center is, in reality, nothing more than a large hotel-style function room. You know what I mean… the kind in which a large corporate-style holiday party would be held, complete with wall-to-wall carpeting. So imagine my surprise when I walked into this facility, expecting a true “event center”… and instead I see an oversized room filled with metal folding chairs. Yes, you read that correctly: metal folding chairs. But wait – it gets better. Our seats were in “section 5, row K.” Guess how we found our seats? Easy! From the PAPER SIGNS lying flat on the floor next to each row of metal folding chairs! Yes, this so-called “event center” spared no expense! My amusement with this layout continued as we tried to find our seats in row K. Our tickets called for seats 12 and 13. Just one problem, though… there were only FIVE seats in row K… and the decal-style numbers on the edge of the seats did not match the numbers on our tickets. While at first this might have seemed like a major problem, we quickly caught on to the “system” of this so-called event center: sit anywhere you want. Which is exactly what we did. We grabbed two seats in the vicinity of section 5, row K… and all worked out well.

Very well, in fact: when two people sat in front of us, obstructing our view of the stage, we simply shifted our metal folding chairs a few inches slightly to the right… and voila! Our unobstructed view of the stage was back! Try THAT at the Dunkin Donuts Center or PPAC. Go ahead… try it… I dare you!
