The ABCs of DejaVu

ABC today officially released its 2008-09 prime-time schedule, and the BIG news is that THERE'S NO NEWS. In other words, ABC 2008 fall schedule looks amazingly like its 2007 fall schedule.

The rationale behind the Alphabet's virtual cloning of its 2007 schedule is that its promising '07 schedule was never given a full chance to succeed outright, due to the ill-timed writers' strike. I suppose that there's some justification behind this thinking... but in my humble opinion, there were some missed opportunities to strengthen a promising-yet-not-fully-proven schedule.

But don't just take my word for it; check out ABC's eerily-familiar fall lineup for yourself (new shows in blue):

MONDAY
8:00 Dancing with the Stars
9:30 Samantha Who?
10:00 Boston Legal

TUESDAY
8:00 Opportunity Knocks
9:00 Dancing with the Stars
10:00 Eli Stone

WEDNESDAY
8:00 Pushing Daisies
9:00 Private Practice
10:00 Dirty Sexy Money

THURSDAY
8:00 Ugly Betty
9:00 Grey's Anatomy
10:00 Life on Mars

FRIDAY
8:00 Wife Swap
9:00 Supernanny
10:00 20/20

SATURDAY
8:00 College Football

SUNDAY
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos
8:00 Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
9:00 Desperate Housewives
10:00 Brothers & Sisters

The two new shows on ABC's lineup are:

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
A new reality/game show from Ashton Kutcher (sorry, but he's no Goodson/Todman when it comes to game shows) brings the opportunity to win prizes right to viewers homes... literally.

LIFE ON MARS
There's this police detective from the 21st century, you see... but something happens and he finds himself transported back to 1972. Get it? Fish out of water, sci-fi time-travel style.

Slightly more interesting news comes from ABC's midseason plans... which include (a) Scrubs moving over from NBC and taking over the Tuesday-at-9 slot at the conclusion of Dancing with the Stars, and (b) According to Jim, which has INEXPLICABLY been renewed for another season. Why ABC, why?

Say goodbye to Cavemen, Carpoolers, Women's Murder Club, and Big Shots. No tears will be shed over the loss of this quartet.

Oh, and by the way -- also returning in midseason will be television's best series, Lost, in a time slot yet to be determined. Hopefully by then we'll know if Locke was able to move the island...
