At That Price, I'll Take Two!

With the recent announcement by CBS of the addition of Let's Make a Deal to its daytime schedule, game shows are officially hot again. It's been about ten years since the game-show genre was hot (when ABC debuted a little show called Who Wants to be a Millionaire - you may have heard of it). And it's been nearly thirty years since a game show replaced a soap opera on a network daytime schedule. But come early October, Deal will replace the venerable soap Guiding Light on CBS's daytime line-up. Light is a victim of long-dwindling ratings.

Deal joins the long-running The Price is Right on the CBS daytime schedule. It was thirty-seven years ago that CBS revived Price (prior to this new CBS revival, Price originally aired in the late-fifties and early-sixties and was hosted by Bill Cullen) for a new morning game-show block (which also included The Joker's Wild and Gambit).

This Friday (September 4) will mark the thirty-seventh anniversary of the premiere of The New Price is Right (as it was originally called). For those of you who would like to experience a small blast of nostalgia, take a look at this clip from that premiere episode thirty-seven years ago. Please pay special attention to the price of a car in 1972; now that's what I call a right price!
