B-O-R-I-N-G

Here it is - September 14 -- with practically mere moments to go until the start of the fall television season... and I'm BORED. Normally, the start of the fall television season inspires me in ways that few other things can. In my world, the arrival of the fall television season always correlates with the air smelling sweeter, the sun shining brighter, and any and all food tasting better. I'm like a kid at Christmastime. That's the way it's always been in my world. Until this year, that is.

Something's wrong. Something's missing. And that something is the fall television season itself.

Oh sure, it's fall. And yeah, there'll be a few new shows starting soon. But sadly, of all of these new shows there's NOT ONE worth watching.

Of all of the networks, ABC is the biggest offender. Using last season's writers' strike as an excuse, ABC is introducing only two new shows. Yes, just two: the high-concept Life on Mars, and a reality contest called Opportunity Knocks. The pilot for Mars was such a mess that it was re-shot after a major recasting (if you've missed the actor who played Christopher on The Sopranos, then you're the one - and only one - who'll want to see the re-shot pilot), and as for Knocks, well... if you find this Opportunity knocking at your door, my advice would be not to answer it.

NBC should be generating some excitement for its new Christian Slater drama (My Own Worst Enemy), but there's just not much there. And CBS? Just when I had found some new respect for its vastly-underrated Swingtown, the eye net goes ahead and cancels Swingtown and adds yet MORE procedural crime dramas. Yawn.

As for the other two... Fox and The CW... yawn, and yawn again. Fox's new sitcom Do Not Disturb would be more aptly titled Do Not Watch, and The CW's update of that famous television zip code 90210 should be stamped "return to sender."

So what will get me through this less-than-robust fall season? Just one thing. Just one thought: there's only 122 days (give-or-take) until the return of Lost. Ahhhhhh... NOW I feel better.
