You'll Love New York

As a public service of this, your favorite blog, please allow me to remind you that the series premiere of I Love New York, the eagerly-anticipated spinoff of Flavor of Love, premieres tomorrow night (Monday) at 9:00pm on VH1. I've already seen the first episode, and it's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the genre of television known as "so bad it's good" TV.

Up front, though, let me make one thing clear: I Love New York is no Flavor of Love. This latest entry from the VH1 reality stable seems to have traded in the HBIC ("head bitch in charge," as she once called herself) version of Tiffany for a kinder, gentler version. Now don't get me wrong: Miss New York will never be mistaken for Mother Teresa, but nevertheless it becomes very clear within the first few moments of the show that this version of New York would never have been able to carry this show on her own. Fortunately for New York (and New York), about 10 minutes into the first episode she's joined by her infamous mother Michele (who, for some unknown reason, is billed in this go-round as "Sister Patterson"). With Mama Michele on the scene, New York comes alive. Mommie dearest is caustic, she's abrasive, and she brings to this show exactly what it needs: conflict. Within moments of her arrival, "Sister Patterson" is mixing it up with the 20 guys... and there's no effort on her part to hide her disdain for the majority of the contestants. Immediately, the entertainment factor of I Love New York rises exponentially, and you just know that you're in for some truly good "bad TV."

Even with the infusion of Mama Michele, I Love New York is still missing the one crucial element that made this VH1 series of reality dating shows so unique: Mister Flavor Flav himself. Only the most unlikely center of a dating series EVER, the inimitable Flavor Flav was the glue that kept legions of bad-TV fans sticking around for more.

So Flav, if you're reading this... please feel free to pay a visit to New York. It's just not the same without you.
